La Carrisa
Mark McConnell
The Show
The Carrizo Plain is an arid valley two hours northwest of Los Angeles. Bounded on the west by the Caliente Mountains and on the east by the Temblor Range and San Andreas Fault, it has one road, largely dirt, that runs the length of the flat valley floor, about 40 miles. Its complex history is reflected in its numerous names – Llano Estero, Carrissa, Cariso, Carrizo. Though now formally designated as The Carrizo Plain National Monument, those who call the area home prefer the more evocative “La Carrisa.”
McConnell: “I’ve been making pictures out there since 2010. I went first for the wildflowers but went back for the elbow room. Over time, returning roughly every season, my visits evolved into an informal practice of observation and photographic exploration. These images are the result of this open-ended process.”
